“When any civilization is dust and ashes," he said, "art is all that's left over. Images, words, music. Imaginative structures. Meaning—human meaning, that is—is defined by them. You have to admit that.”
― Margaret Atwood, Oryx and Crake

I believe in keeping topics discussed in History and English relevant to students' lives. History isn't a timeline, but a web of events, people, and places that link together from the past into the present and future; I hope to show students how it is all connected, and that the past has created the wonders and horrors of today. I also believe in the power of the written word; both reading and writing are huge components of my classes. Students will read primary sources as well as secondary sources. Personal accounts, quotes, news articles, and interviews help history to become alive, and link to the topics discussed in the books we are reading. I love to write, and hope to make it less of a scary experience for students who struggle to find their voice through practice and modeling. All students are writers.

I also believe strongly in adapting work to fit the needs of students while still reaching the same type of end goal. I will work with your students to meet their needs within my classroom, and help them reach their fullest learning potential.

All homework will be listed on my Google Classroom. There is calendar with due dates for each assignment as well as copies of the homework assignments, papers, and projects in case one is misplaced. They will be put up the day the are assigned so that students are not tempted to work ahead without instruction, or do not feel overwhelmed by the list.

My website is a dystopian/apocalyptic theme for a reason - not just because many students and I enjoy the genre. Without learning to think for ourselves, back our opinions with facts, and building a deep platform of knowledge, there is little hope for humanity. We live in dark times, and students need to prepare themselves to help create a better tomorrow while still finding the wonders that the world has to offer.
